Sourcing: What’s Changing, and Where Are the Opportunities?

Sourcing: What’s Changing, and Where Are the Opportunities?

Sourcing isn’t what it used to be. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

In recent years, the conversation has shifted—from cost-saving alone to resilience, reliability, relationships. Businesses, especially SMEs, are now having to think more strategically. It’s no longer just who can make the product—but how, where, under what conditions, and with what kind of backup plan? And how about sustainability and Net Zero?

Geopolitics, tariffs, and shifting regulations have created uncertainty—but they’ve also created space. Space to review supply chains. To diversify. To rediscover overlooked partners. To build in flexibility.

China, for example, remains a powerhouse. What I’ve seen on the ground recently is not a retreat—but a recalibration. Many factories are investing in quality, sustainability, and longer-term collaboration. And beyond China, there are growing ecosystems in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world offering new potential.

It’s not always straightforward, as nothing is absolutely straightforward. But it is navigable – with the right insight, the right contacts, and a bit of patience.

For SMEs in particular, this is a moment to be creative – not reactive. To rethink sourcing not as a problem to solve, but as a strategy to shape.

If you’re looking at your options – exploring new markets, reviewing suppliers, or simply trying to make sense of it all – the team at International Trade Matters are happy to share what we have seen and learned. Whether it’s China, beyond, or a hybrid model, there are still good people doing good work. And there are still ways to build smart, sustainable, trusted supply chains.
