SPOTLIGHT ON: The Spirit of Success

Building up to the leaders of the world’s biggest economies coming to the South West of England in June…

The International Trade Matters Spotlight features some of the region’s global players – and a taste of post Covid-19 recovery

The leaders of the UK, USA, Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Japan, comprising the G7, along with invited leaders from Australia, India, South Korea, and the EU, will attend the 2021 summit from 11 to 13 June in Cornwall’s Carbis Bay.

This month’s Spotlight feature is on Curio Spirits and featuring a Cornish couple who run an award winning and successful artisan gin and vodka distillery that is an international success story.

William and Rubina Tyler-Street set up Curio Spirits based in Mullion, at the far west of Cornwall nearly 6 years ago, and wanted to create a range of gins and vodkas that are inspired by fragrant botanicals and natural ingredients that reflect the Cornish culture, heritage, and plant life locally.

Mrs Tyler-Street explained; “Our first products took to the local stage in 2014, when we invested in two small stills, a rotary evaporator and spent a lot of time and experimentation with ideas in creating a range of spirituous beverages to keep satisfying our adventurous nature and competitive streak with each other.”

“We are very much a family run business, and my Mother-in-law is a passionate gin drinker.”

“I was not a fan until we started making our own original and unique brand of spirits that is becoming a world beater- especially in Canada.”

Curio Spirits beat a long line of other distilleries from across the UK and won the flavoured gin section in the Great British Food Awards in 2019.

Mr Tyler-Street, said; “Curio Blueberry Gin is distilled with blueberries from a a former Cornish monastery, and we only use pure natural spring water from the Cornish Spring Water Company for our distillations and work with other local suppliers that make our spirits so unique.”

“Our distillery is making quadruple distilled gin and vodka, resulting in a gin which is extra smooth with subtle flavours that capture the taste and flavours of Cornwall.”

Rubina, added; “Both William and I have always had an interest in spirits and flavours and having Asian backgrounds has meant that we have a taste for how different spices work together.”

“I was an enterprise facilitator in Bradford, nurturing small companies, and on a visit to Cornwall, I fell deeply in love with the county, and is where I met my husband William whose family comes from the area. Those skills helping other businesses came in handy setting up our own company,” she said.

“Gin is very much the drink of the 2020s and especially our range of artisan spirits that are generating our export success story.”

“Curio Spirits market their own design range of bottles and made from 80% recycled glass, and the Cornish coastline played such an integral part of the name and creation in our global-beating spirits,”
